Kundalini Yoga, known as “the Yoga of awareness,” is an ancient technology for awakening the life force lying dormant within each one of us. Conceptualized as a sleeping serpent, coiled up at the base of our spine, this latent source of primordial energy is mobilized through the actions and components of the kriyas that lie at the heart of Kundalini Yoga practice.

A Kriya is a sequence of physical movements or postures that often include pranayam (breathwork), mantras (sacred syllables), mudras (hand positions), bandhas (body locks), as well as eye focus and angular positions to awaken, direct and contain the flow of this spiritual energy within.

Kundalini Energy is Our Own Inherent Creative Wisdom

Yoga cosmology recognizes ten “bodies” that every human possesses and expresses. One might best consider these as ten capacities or varieties of experience and expression that are a part of our understanding as human beings. Millennia of Yoga practice has shown that each of these ten bodies is very real in experience and can be tended to, and nurtured, by specific Yoga practices.

Karuna - Light on Kundalini

Meet Karuna

A devoted mother, daughter, sister, friend and teacher, Karuna brings her own unique brand of compassion, enthusiasm and pure joy to every Kundalini Yoga practice. Based in Boulder, CO, she teaches daily group yoga classes and private lessons, leads weekend intensives on varying themes including relationships, women’s issues and mastering challenges, and leads retreats internationally.

Karuna is an Associate Level Trainer in the Aquarian Trainer Academy. She arranges Level One teacher training programs and Level Two teacher training modules in conjunction with Lead Teachers from the Kundalini Research Institute. In addition, she offers guided health cleanses, and organizes special events featuring world-renowned Kundalini Yoga teachers, artists and musicians.

Certified in teaching yoga to children, teenagers and prenatal moms, Karuna has taught for the Santa Monica/Malibu school system in California, leading classes for second and fourth graders, as well as high school students.

Karuna’s Path
A classically trained actress and former Ford model, Karuna’s path to self discovery began long before she ever took her first Kundalini class. While studying at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England, she began teaching yoga professionally to actors, classmates, and private referrals. She later helped develop The Life Centre’s yoga program in London. As the actor, Anthony Hopkins, once said to her, “You have to find yourself to be yourself.”

Finding Herself and Being Herself
Karuna continued to find more of herself as she studied Hinduism, Buddhism, and the Lakota Sioux healing tradition. As her exploration of spiritual practices continued to deepen, she attended a Kundalini yoga class in Los Angeles taught by Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa.
Immediately, Karuna was captivated by this amazing technology—unlike any other yoga she had experienced—in which posture, breath, mantra and meditation blend into a rich whole. Karuna was honored when Gurmukh invited her to apprentice with him.

Karuna Shines
Today, Karuna shares those treasured teachings with Kundalini yoga students in Boulder, and all over the world. True to her spiritual name, which means “compassion,” Karuna likens herself to a coach, helping her students push beyond self-imposed limits. Her classes are filled with humor, music and the spirit of transformation. And Anthony Hopkins would be happy to know that she continues to find herself more and more every day, in each of her students’ faces.

"The real gift from both Karuna and Kundalini, at least for me, is that my practice does not end in the classroom. Rather, the teachings have extended into all aspects of my life, broadening my horizons, and leaving me with a deep sense of serenity, even during the most stressful situations. Thank you, Karuna!”

“As both a student and teacher of yoga for many years, I was thrilled to find Karuna and Kundalini Yoga classes at Rally Sport. Kundalini is very different from other yogas, and what makes this particular class so attractive for me is Karuna herself."

“The mantras I have learned from my Kundalini practice have truly changed my life. When I am under physical or emotional stress I find myself chanting and my whole being becomes much calmer.  The place I notice this the most is when I am in a long running race and feeling that discomfort that comes in any race. When I chant I am able to refocus and quiet my negative mind. I feel so blessed to have found such a remarkable tool that I can use in all aspects of my life from racing to parenting to marriage. It helps me to be a better person.”

"Totally unexpected transformation that occurred at cellular level unbeknown to me, just sneaked in or seeped in.
Experiential transformation was different from philosophical transformation that I have experienced from my readings and other philosophical conferences."

"Kundalini was a dear friend to me during that time as I was working to get out of a very difficult relationship and the technology changed my life!"
