The Yoga of Awareness

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga, known as “the Yoga of awareness” is an ancient technology for awakening the life force lying dormant within each one of us. Conceptualized as a sleeping serpent, coiled up at the base of our spine, this latent source of primordial energy is mobilized through the actions and components of the kriyas that lie at the heart of Kundalini Yoga practice.

A Kriya is a sequence of physical movements or postures that often include pranayam (breathwork), mantras (sacred syllables), mudras (hand positions), bandhas (body locks), as well as eye focus and angular positions to awaken, direct and contain the flow of this spiritual energy within.

Join Karuna as she leads you through powerful ancient yoga practices known for their deeply spiritual, meditational, and subtle-realm elements. Karuna demonstrates and explains the wisdom of each to help you explore the depth of your grief and heal it.

You Are Not Alone

With tenacity and courage we can get through this challenge together.

MODULE ONE: Getting The Body Out of Distress

Grief, anxiety, worry, fear, concern, etc. are not just experiences in our psyches and emotions. Because we are holistic organisms of spirit and body, all psychic and emotional elements are also deeply embedded in our bodies.

In Healing Grief it is important first to make the body comfortable, by knowing that it is recognized and loved, and in thus calming and relaxing the body creating the environment for a whole-systems approach to the transformation process we are undertaking.

This is one of the great gifts of Yoga.

MODULE TWO: Balancing the Five Tattvas

Ancient wisdom discovered five qualities of our senses in the world and our senses of the world. After quieting and relaxing the body we want to balance these five essential ways that we all sense in, and of, the world.

The ancient traditions called these “Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether”. Today we know ether as Consciousness and the intertwining of earth, air, fire, and water as the essential “states of matter” -- gases, liquids and solids-- and their combustions (fire) that have formed both our bodies and the entire universe.

These Kriyas are ancient ones nurturing this balance.

MODULE THREE: Pittra for Healing and Grief

Pittra has an ancient history in the East for healing from calamity, grief, or disaster. The word itself means “ancestor” or “history” and thus directly refers to something lost.

Ancient Kriyas for grief like those in this module were often practiced in nature, especially by a river, to give the sense of healing with the flowing of time.

In Yoga, stress is seen as a “frozen” state. It needs to be released with relaxation of both body and spirit, which is the function of these three Kriyas.

Health and Happiness Are Your Birthrights

Reconcile, Rejuvenate, and Heal

Grief is the first layer of trauma. We store grief under our anger, resentment, destruction, and the way we speak to ourselves. It's important to understand the layers of grief so we can release them.
